Kensington Palace, Dress Codes

Dress Codes is a temporary exhibition at Kensington Palace, created by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces, showcasing treasures from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection. Highlights include pieces worn by Queen Victoria, Diana, Princess of Wales and Dame Vivienne Westwood, as well as royal staff uniforms and clothing for royal occasions worn by the public.

Our designs introduced a subtle ‘code’ of linear graphic and lighting elements that was reconfigured in each room to support the curatorial narrative. Bold, saturated colour and carefully calibrated lighting were also used to craft a dynamic and engaging backdrop for the clothes on display.

Central to the design process was a collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces’ team of ‘Young Producers’ – members of local youth groups who co-designed and co-curated the exhibition and produced content for display. We led an early participatory workshop on the design of the exhibition, bringing the young people into the process in a hands-on way, then continued the dialogue throughout the project, navigating together through the challenges of collaborative exhibition making.
