Pálava House of Nature Dolní Věstonice

The Pálava House of Nature is a new museum in the Czech Republic, situated close to one of the oldest excavated sites of human habitation in the world, best known for the Venus of Dolní Věstonice figurine.

The museum explores the relationships between natural and human history, showing how people, plants and animals have adapted over millennia in this evolving landscape.

The exhibition is introduced by a 16-metre long biodiversity wall organised into ten local biotopes, each represented by the plants and animals which thrive in that environment. Close to 200 artefacts were specially commissioned and created for the exhibition by local botanists, illustrators, model makers, artists, photographers and sound specialists.

At the centre of the space a large interactive map places the area’s social and natural history in context. Projections, artefacts and digital interactives are used to playfully reveal how the many layers of the region’s unique identity have changed over time.
